Kalibrierung of Driver-Assistance Systems: What the Insurer Must Pay
Kalibrierung (sensor recalibration), wheel alignment and high-voltage checks are part of a proper accident repair whenever the manufacturer's specification requires them for the specific repair — whether or not courts have ruled on it yet.
Does this apply to you? The decisive fork
You had the car repaired and hold an invoice
The Kalibrierung was carried out and invoiced. The Werkstattrisiko (the risk that the repair shop's own pricing is later disputed) lies with the party at fault here too — even if the invoice is not yet paid (BGH VI ZR 38/22, 16.01.2024). You do not have to justify why the workshop considered it necessary, as long as the repair area was sensor-relevant.
You are settling on the basis of the report, without repairing
Then it comes down to whether your report establishes the technical necessity by reference to the manufacturer's specification — which repair step triggers which Kalibrierung. A mere note saying "vehicle has driver-assistance systems" is not enough; what matters is the specific repair area (axle geometry, ride height, suspension parts, sensor zones). Under a notional settlement, VAT is not reimbursed as long as it has not been incurred (§ 249 Abs. 2 Satz 2 BGB) — including on the Kalibrierung.
Comprehensive-cover case (Kaskofall)
If you claim through your comprehensive insurance, the insurer reviews the Kalibrierung by the same contractual standards as any other repair item under your AKB (motor insurance terms). Absent a separate rule, ordinary liability damages law applies here too. There is no comprehensive-cover-specific decision on Kalibrierung.
Driver-assistance systems such as emergency braking or lane-keeping assist steer using cameras and radar sensors whose alignment depends on exact vehicle geometry. After bodywork, suspension or glass repairs, that alignment can shift, even with visually minor damage. If the recalibration is skipped, a system may deliver incorrect data or fail altogether.
Do driver-assistance systems need to be recalibrated after an accident?
Kalibrierung is carried out either statically (using calibration boards) or dynamically (via a test drive).
Does the high-voltage battery need to be checked after an accident?
For electric and hybrid vehicles, a further, technically justified check is added: inspecting the high-voltage battery for damage. The reasoning is the same as for sensor calibration: a battery that is damaged or compromised in its insulation is a safety risk for occupants, rescue workers and workshop staff, and full restoration to a roadworthy condition (§ 249 BGB) includes this check where the course of the accident suggests it. A publicly available technical standard specifically on this could not be verified in this research; the item therefore rests solely on the general technical justification, not on a single source.

|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Published court decisions on camera/radar Kalibrierung after an accident repair, across nine search approaches | own review of case law | 28.08.2026 |
| 2 Verfahren | Kalibrierung is carried out either statically (calibration boards) or dynamically (test drive) | Krafthand | 16.12.2018 |
| 7. Juli 2026 | Cut-off date: the EU General Safety Regulation II tightens requirements for new type approvals/first registrations, with no retrofit duty for existing vehicles (secondary source, EU text not directly checked) | qualitaet-ist-mehrwert.de | Abruf 28.08.2026 |
Worked example
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Repair cost per report, net | 2,860.00 € |
| of which wheel alignment | 90.00 € |
| of which camera calibration | 240.00 € |
| Insurer's payment | 2,530.00 € |
Result: 240.00 € shortfall. The insurer struck the Kalibrierung for lack of manufacturer evidence. Where the report sets out the sensor-relevant necessity, the deduction can be challenged.
What the insurer typically writes
These are paraphrased summaries of typical settlement-letter reasoning, not verbatim quotes from one specific letter.
„Kalibrierarbeiten sind eine betriebsinterne Qualitätskontrolle und keine gesondert abrechenbare Reparaturposition.“ (English: "Calibration work is an internal quality check, not a separately billable repair item.")
„Ein Nachweis der Herstellervorgabe für diese Kalibrierung liegt uns nicht vor; wir können die Position daher nicht anerkennen.“ (English: "We have no evidence of a manufacturer requirement for this calibration, so we cannot recognise the item.")
„Die Achsvermessung erstatten wir nur, wenn ein konkreter Zusammenhang mit der Fahrwerksgeometrie belegt ist.“ (English: "We only reimburse the wheel alignment if a specific link to the suspension geometry is evidenced.")
„Die Prüfung der Hochvolt-Batterie ist eine allgemeine Sicherheitsmaßnahme des Herstellers und keine unfallbedingte Reparaturkostenposition.“ (English: "The high-voltage battery check is a general manufacturer safety measure, not an accident-related repair cost item.")

English translation (for your understanding only — send the German text above, not this one):
The insurer refers you to a cheaper workshop — does it have the necessary calibration equipment?
Kalibrierung needs a calibration bay, manufacturer-specific boards, a current diagnostic tester, and access to the manufacturer's portal. A reference workshop is only equivalent if it provides all of this:
- A calibration bay and boards for your vehicle brand, or does it pass the work on to a subcontractor?
- Access to the manufacturer's portal for current calibration data?
- Trained, certified staff for ADAS calibration?
- A calibration record with before-and-after measurements?
- Was the workshop named to you before the repair, or only afterwards?

Please confirm in writing that this workshop has its own calibration bay for my vehicle model, access to the manufacturer's portal, and issues a calibration record. Without this evidence, I do not consider the workshop demonstrably equivalent.
Note: this is general guidance on wording, not legal advice for your individual case. Adapt the text to your own situation or seek advice from a lawyer for your specific matter.
What the insurer typically does next
- It pays the balance, if the report specifically names the repair area and the manufacturer requirement.
- It asks for a calibration record with target/actual values and evidence of a test drive.
- It names a cheaper reference workshop — more on that below.
- It sticks to the deduction — without clarification, only the technical evidence overcomes this.
Where you find this item: Kalibrierung and wheel alignment, where recorded, usually sit under "electronics/sensors". If the item or a technical justification is missing, request a supplementary statement that specifically names the repair area and the manufacturer requirement.
On the deadline: a liability insurer (Haftpflichtversicherer) is usually allowed a review period of four to six weeks from submission of the complete documents. Set a specific payment deadline. If the insurer does not respond, it falls into default (Verzug, § 286 BGB) and owes default interest. Claims generally become time-barred after three years, counted to the end of the year (§ 195, § 199 BGB).
This reflects German law and German court practice.
Why there is no case law on this yet
Three reasons why no published court decision exists on this so far:
- The technology is younger than the published case law. Camera/radar sensors requiring calibration have only become widespread in the last few years.
- Local-court (Amtsgericht) judgments are almost never published. The amounts in dispute usually sit at that level, and such decisions rarely appear in free databases.
- The item has only been cut for a few years. As long as insurers mostly recognised the cost, no dispute arose.
What carries weight instead: the technical justification. The ZKF (a German bodywork and paint trade association) states: "A proper and expert accident repair fully includes the adjustment, calibration and function check by test drive of driver-assistance systems" (ZKF-Hinweis, 26.09.2019, our translation). Manufacturers provide no predefined labour times for this.
Workshops are liable not only for omitted but also for faulty calibration (autoservicepraxis.de, 2024). Correct wheel alignment is a precondition for any calibration: the camera is aligned to the bodywork's symmetry axis, which can differ from the geometric drive axis (Pilkington AGR-Blog, 2023). The injured party is entitled to full restoration (§ 249 BGB); where calibration is part of a proper repair, it is part of the necessary cost — a matter of technical reasoning, not a case-by-case court decision.
Checked, but not confirmed: no publicly citable calculation item at DAT SilverDAT or Audatex, no ADAS guidance note from the ZDK (a different association from the ZKF cited above), no DIN/ISO standard on a duty to calibrate ADAS.
Adjacent case law — not on calibration, but related
These decisions are expressly not presented as calibration case law, but as adjacent evidence:
| Court | Case number | Date | What it concerns | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG Düsseldorf | 16 O 87/11 U | 25.06.2013 | Wheel alignment owed where there is a justified suspicion of impaired tracking/handling. | adjacent, wheel alignment — not calibration |
| AG Hannover | 528 C 2052/02 | 04.06.2002 | Alignment costs reimbursable even notionally. | outdated, pro line, adjacent |
| AG Duisburg | 35 C 2752/00 | 18.10.2000 | Opposing position: alignment serves diagnosis, not restoration — not reimbursable notionally. | outdated, contra line, adjacent |
| AG Überlingen | 1 C 215/16 | 03.02.2017 | Reading fault-memory data after a repair to be reimbursed, where it matches the report. | adjacent, not calibration |
| AG Zittau | 8 C 119/24 | 16.07.2024 | Opposing position to the neighbouring test-drive/fault-memory line: test-drive costs were not recognised as reimbursable. The freely accessible summary confirms court, case number and date, but the excerpt shown there concerns a different point of dispute in the same proceedings — the test-drive statement comes from secondary analysis, not from reading the full text ourselves. | adjacent, opposing position — not calibration |
| AG Gießen | 45 C 37/18 | 2018 | A test drive/fault-memory read carries staff cost that can be comprehensibly re-billed. | adjacent, not calibration |
AG Hannover and AG Duisburg represent opposing lines from 2000/2002, older than today's ADAS technology — named only for completeness, not as current guidance. Even for test drives and fault-memory reading the local-court line is not uniform: AG Zittau's rejection sets it against the otherwise mostly favourable practice.
Frequently asked questions
The insurer won't pay for the wheel alignment — do I really need it?
If the course of the accident suggests impaired tracking or handling, yes — recognised by the courts.
Do driver-assistance systems need recalibrating after an accident?
If the manufacturer specification requires it for the repair area, yes. Otherwise sensors may deliver wrong data or fail.
Does the high-voltage battery need checking after an accident?
Yes for electric and hybrid vehicles, if the accident suggests damage — a safety reason.
Is there case law on calibrating driver-assistance systems?
Not on camera/radar calibration itself. Only adjacent decisions on wheel alignment and fault-memory reading, which do not directly answer the core question.
Why does the workshop want a test drive after the repair?
To check function after work on electronic components — several local courts treat this as reimbursable.
